Rocket Ship

about

Rocket Ship was one of the first songs Steve brought to the table for the band. Originally the lyrics were about Bob Marley getting shot, but Francis suggested that Steve write about something more personal,
so the “see the same moon, but a different set of stars” line was brought in to convey the melancholy of long distance hemispherical separation from someone you love, yet illustrating how the problem can be solved by doing whatever it takes to be with them. Francis added the politically inspired verses (which are addressed to hypocritical right-wing groups) to add another level of depth to the concepts of distance and difference, in ideology as well as geography.

lyrics

ROCKET SHIP

WE SEE THE SAME MOON
BUT A DIFFERENT SET OF STARS
WE SEE THE SAME MOON
BUT A DIFFERENT SET OF STARS
WE SEE THE SAME MOON
BUT A DIFFERENT SET OF STARS

GONNA BUILD A ROCKET SHIP
FASTER THAN MY CAR

SEE YOU ON THE TV
BUT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND
ALL THE PROBLEMS OF THE WORLD
ALL IN ONE MAN'S HAND
DOES IT TAKE A BLOODY FIGHT
TO PROVE WHO'S RIGHT
I DON'T THINK SO

HEARD YOU TELLING LIES
HOPE YOU DON'T BELIEVE
PROPAGANDA THAT YOU'RE PREACHING
YOU'RE TRYING TO DECEIVE
ALL THE PEOPLE THAT YOU'RE TELLING
IT'S UP TO YOU AND ME
I DON'T THINK SO

THERE'S NO DISTANCE
THAT'S TOO FAR
WHEN IT COMES TO PUSH AND SHOVE
EVERY NIGHT I GO OUTSIDE
AND STARE AT THE STARS ABOVE
WHEN I DO IT'S YOU I'M THINKING OF

I FEEL MY SKIN CRAWLING, EVERY TIME I LOOK AT YOU
IT'S NOT THE WAY YOU LOOK
IT'S JUST THE THINGS YOU DO
ALL THE REASONS THAT YOU'RE GIVING
YOU THINK YOU WON'T GET CAUGHT
I DON'T THINK SO

I TASTE THE VENOM FLOWING
WITH ALL THE WORDS YOU SAY
YOU TELL ME IT'S ALRIGHT
YOU TELL ME IT'S OK
BUT I'VE SEEN IT ALL BEFORE
YOU'RE ROTTEN TO THE CORE
YEAH I THINK SO
