The Resignators were asked to contribute to The Specialized Project's 2022 release of "Our Way", a Ska tribute to the legendary Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.). We chose "Night and Day", a popular jazz standard written by Cole Porter for the 1932 musical "Gay Divorce". It is Porter's most popular contribution to the Great American Songbook and has been recorded by dozens of musicians, including 5 times Frank Sinatra.
The Resignators put a new slant on the tune with a Rockabilly intro, a swinging Reggae/Big Band "soli" style verse and chorus, and a punk rock outro.
"Night and Day" has unusual chord changes.
The tune begins with a pedal dominant with a major seventh chord built on the flattened sixth of the key, which then resolves to the dominant seventh in the next bar. This section repeats and is followed by a descending harmonic sequence starting with a -7♭5 (half diminished seventh chord or Ø) built on the augmented fourth of the key, and descending by semitones—with changes in the chord quality—to the supertonic minor seventh, which forms the beginning of a more standard II-V-I progression. The bridge is also unusual, with a unexpected key change up a minor third, before an equally transient and unexpected return to the key centre.
lyrics
Night and Day
Like the beat, beat, beat of the tom-tom
When the jungle shadows fall
Like the tick, tick-tock of the stately clock
As it stands against the wall
Like the beat, beat, beat of the tom-tom
Like the drip, drip, drip of the raindrops
When the summer shower is through
So a voice within me keeps repeating you, you, you
Night and day, you are the one
Only you beneath the moon and under the sun
Whether near to me or far
It's no matter darling where you are
I think of you
Night and say, day and night, why is it so
That this longing for you follows wherever I go?
In the roaring traffic's boom
In the silence of my lonely room
I think of you
Night and day, night and day
Under the hide of me
There's an oh, such a hungry yearning, burning inside of me
And its torment won't be through
'Til you let me spend my life making love to you
Day and night, night and day
This torment won't be through
'Til you let me spend my life making love to you
Day and night, night and day
Day and night, night and day
Day and night, night and day
Day and night, day and night
Day and night, night and day
